Borland Introduces Business Intelligence for Software Delivery with Release of Gauntlet™
Continuous Build and Test Automation Product Generates Real-Time Visibility and Metrics across the Entire Delivery Lifecycle
Cupertino, Calif. - Jan 29, 2007 : Borland Software Corporation (NASDAQ: BORL, www.borland.com), the global leader in Open application lifecycle management (ALM), today unveiled Borland® Gauntlet™, an innovative continuous build and test automation product that supports effective lifecycle quality management (LQM) by enabling organizations to continuously track, measure and improve software quality throughout the application lifecycle.
Gauntlet advances software delivery by instituting quality controls within existing version control processes. These controls, or "gauntlets," enable development teams to identify and isolate problems earlier in the application lifecycle – when their impact can be minimized – by automatically inspecting development artifacts every time a change is made or at desired intervals.
"With Gauntlet, organizations will be able to open the 'black box' of software development by embedding efficient testing and measurement earlier in the application lifecycle," said Rob Cheng, director of developer solutions of Borland Software. "Gauntlet enables software organizations to move from a state of unknown quality, reliability and risk to an environment of transparency, accountability and predictability across the entire organization and software delivery lifecycle."
Gauntlet has been developed from the ground up to adhere to Borland's Open ALM product strategy, designed to support the integration of a wide range of development and testing tools while still providing a unified view of all quality metrics. It also integrates with leading configuration management products – including Borland StarTeam®, CVS and Subversion – automatically running "gauntlets" against code as developers check changes into the system.
"Software is at the heart of every competitive business today, however, the failure rate of software projects – due to common issues like poor quality, missed requirements or simply late delivery – remains incredibly high," said Bola Rotibi, senior analyst with Ovum. "The ability to automatically test and measure software quality early and often throughout the delivery lifecycle is critical to helping organizations flip the ratio on the success and failure rate of software projects. In this regard technologies like Borland's Gauntlet product are well placed."
Many Gauntlets; A Single View into Application Quality
Gauntlet supports a growing number of third-party and open source integrations that enable customers to test for a broad range of potential defects – from code complexity and readability to security vulnerabilities or license compliance. Additionally, Gauntlet makes it easy for customers to add or create their own custom "gauntlets," all of which feed metrics into centralized Gauntlet dashboards. Open source and commercial integrations for Gauntlet that are currently available or under development, include:
- Open Source Tools: Ant, CheckStyle, Emma, Findbugs, JUnit, NUnit and PMD.
- Commercial Tools: Cenzic Hailstorm for Web application vulnerability assessment; Fortify SCA for source code security analysis; Klocwork K7 for automated software detect and prevention; Lint4J for static Java source code analysis; and Palamida IP Amplifier for software intellectual property compliance scanning and auditing.
Gauntlet's dashboards include real-time snapshots and time series analysis of metrics like build performance, unit or functional test results, code coverage and project activity. By making it possible for customers to view and measure application health earlier in the lifecycle, Gauntlet helps development teams gain greater confidence and accountability in their estimates, technical predictions and risk assessments, while at the same time allowing management to identify at-risk projects early enough in the lifecycle for changes in scope or resources to make a difference.

Cenzic
"Cenzic is very excited about the integration of the industry leading Cenzic Hailstorm application risk management and vulnerability assessment solution and its unique Stateful Assessment™ approach, with the continuous testing and analysis capabilities of Borland Gauntlet," said Mandeep Khera, vice president of marketing for Cenzic. "We believe the combination will deliver new value to customers and further Cenzic's mission to provide proactive application security quality assurance that assists companies in detecting and managing security vulnerabilities, testing for application logic and enforcing security policies throughout the software development lifecycle."
Fortify"Fortify Software is excited to partner with Borland to extend our award-winning software security solutions into Gauntlet's continuous build and test automation system," said Barmak Meftah, vice president of Products, Fortify Software. "Combining Fortify's powerful source code and runtime analyzers with Borland Gauntlet will enable customers to find a broader range of security flaws earlier and more efficiently, and deliver more secure software that meets their customer and regulatory requirements."
Jutils.com"Borland Gauntlet is a great framework to work with for both open source projects and small commercial projects like our Lint4j Java source code analyzer," said Stefan Reich, founder of jutils.com. "It took only a few days to complete the integration with Gauntlet, which will allow Borland's large ALM customer base to leverage the Lint4j software quality analysis engine to quickly detect problematic code."
Klocwork"Klocwork is pleased to be teaming with Borland to enable customers to more consistently leverage our premier static analysis software to detect and prevent software defects and security vulnerabilities early in the development process," said Ian Gordon, vice president of Product Management, Klocwork. "Borland Gauntlet will make it even easier for customers to deploy Klocwork K7 system-wide and benefit from integrating K7's code inspection capabilities with their existing version control processes."
Palamida"Our partnership with Borland extends the value of Palamida's software intellectual property management and audit solutions," said Mark Tolliver, CEO of Palamida. "Palamida's IP Amplifier coupled with Borland Gauntlet provides an end-to-end approach to software IP compliance. IP Amplifier performs a Hot Scan of the code base, uncovering open source and third-party commercial code and prioritizes them in order of concern. Gauntlet takes this software assurance to the next level by ensuring that the code base remains compliant. By flagging or rejecting changes to the code that violate policy at the point developers attempt to add them to the code base, organizations are now able to mitigate risk and protect their information assets at the development level."
